Is this 18-Goal Striker the Answer to Arsenal’s Striking Problems?

For what seems like the 17,000th time, for the umpteenth transfer window, the Express report that Arsenal are being linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan striker has not enjoyed a fruitful start to the season and remains goalless after three games. However, it is not just his ability to find the net that will have PSG fans slightly worried, but his overall performances have been far from impressive.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has missed the opening of the season due to injury and the expectation was that Cavani could use this opportunity to start the campaign with a bang. His boots seem to be filled with damp sparklers, rather than rockets and perhaps, if Arsenal’s proposed offer has any truth to it, the Parisians might be tempted to gamble.

BBC pundit and South American expert recently summed up the 28-year-old perfectly:

“He’s a box to box centre-forward, his workrate is outstanding. He is quite happy to chase well back into his own half and he really does put in a shift.”

“My doubt about him – and I’ve seen a lot of him from Uruguay under-20s – is that he never quite manages to score the goals you’d expect.”

Although he did scored 18 league goals last season, from the amount of opportunities he had, it should have been more. Then, after excelling in the Champions League group stage, he failed to find the net in the games that mattered.

The Ligue 1 champions have been adamant that they would now only chase new additions if someone left the club. It suggests that any move for Cavani would be rejected. Selling one of the main strikers would mean Laurent Blanc’s side would need to find an able replacement before the French deadline closes at midnight on the 31st of August.

There are not many world class strikers available in the current window, and then trying to convince another club to sell a top player, so close to the deadline, would be an extremely difficult task.

Arsenal may be getting desperate for striking options this summer, but it would take a huge change in mindset to see PSG allow the forward to move in this transfer window. Arsene Wenger may have to take his money elsewhere….and Arsenal fans may thank him for it.
